Pollution in Mauritius

My article is to draw your attention on one of a very serious current issue, of course I am referring to Environmental Pollution, mainly the air pollution. As the whole world is suffering from the adverse affects of pollution so is Mauritius. It’s been a long time since the industries in the county have been contaminating the rich environmental resources. These pollutions are, air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution. Therefore as the issues are becoming more and more complex the ministry of Environment is adapting serious measures to control and monitor the situation. Why to control the air pollution? It is all because the air pollutants are very harmful substances. Harmful to human being and damage the environment. How the government is controlling the situation? And corruption is holding a higher position against the law is another issue.

Where does the air pollution comes from?
Let’s talk about the most serious issue which is the air pollution and the measures.
The air pollution is everywhere on the small Island and keep on increasing day by day. The main sources of the air pollution are from the burning of fossil
fuel for the heat generation in industries, electricity generation and transportation. As we are all aware that Mauritius’s Economy relies mostly on the textile industries for exportation and thus more industries mean more pollution in other words. It is good to know what the main air pollutants are causing the trouble. These pollutants are sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, ozone, lead and dust particles. The sources of air pollution can be grouped into three categories as follows:
• stationary sources such as power stations and industries e.g. stone crushing plants;
• mobile sources such as motor vehicles; and
• others such as open burning of waste materials and burning of sugar-cane fields.

The measures adopted in Mauritius in controlling air pollution.
The following measures are adopted by the Ministry of Environment in controlling air pollution:
• minimising emissions at source;
• minimising the impact of residual pollution on surrounding developments by proper sitting of industries and
• monitoring of ambient air at suspected sites.

How is it be controlled?
Stop the industries from polluting the environment. But how is it possible for industry to run without throwing their pollution out? The only way to prevent the population from these harmful effects is where the industrial zone is situated. The industry located near the residential areas is banned and controlled.
So that not to be living in polluted areas like industrial pollutants. Other serious issues are burning of waste materials . The Ministry is monitoring suspected areas of these pollutions and fines the polluters.
The exhaust fumes from the transport as well is harmful like the smoke coming from the car, buses, and trucks etc. Day by day the number of vehicles is increasing on the road and thus air pollution is higher.

Corruptions are spreading all around Mauritius nowadays. And for this reason sometimes is it very difficult government to control the situation. How? Everything can be resolved if you have money. I think that Mauritius’s laws are not a real punishment. People don’t really respect the laws and thus the pollution matters are being ignored as well. Lets take this example if you are being caught by the police or any environmental officer, the fine is that your car is emitting black smokes then no problem you just need to pay the officer immediately just not to consider the fines. Therefore whenever you pollute the environment, you have someone who just takes the laws in their hands and thus the problem remains unchanged.

POLLUTION THEN CORRUPTION!!
